What’s Your Music Worth To You?

Do you buy music online? I do, of course. Like any self-respecting citizen, the last thing I would want to do is offend the RIAA. They, of course, and their lackeys, are free to offend me, and I will, of course, keep taking it. Of course.

EMI Group boss Alain Levy said at press conference today that he believed Jobs would introduce multiple price points for iTunes music within the next year.

Perhaps surprisingly, Joel Spolsky jumped on this, and in his usually intelligent manner proceeds to delve into the underlying issues inherent in a move like this.

The entertainment industry has to maintain a straight face and tell you that Gigli or Battlefield Earth are every bit as valuable as Wedding Crashers or Star Wars or nobody will go see them.

Which, of course, begs the question: who is placing value on the entertainment industry’s product? The consumer? Or the industry?

If you said the consumer, you’re wrong. And I feel sorry for you, and your hollow existence, forced to listen to Britney Spears cover bands for eternity.

When Blog’s Collide: A True Story

There’s nothing like having friends who blog. It lets you keep up with the ongoing story of their lives, without actually having to talk to, see, or otherwise interact with, them. Wait, did I say friends?

What’s even better is having friends who work with you who blog. You know what they say about girls who dorm together? If you don’t, it doesn’t matter. If you do, I don’t need to tell you. Regardless, that’s what having friends who work with you and spend 8 hours at a stretch together and blog is like.

They blog the same things. At the same time. Even when they’re not…together.

Granted, neither Chris or Mike have mentioned either of these (and until now, neither did I), but I’m sure they’ll get to it… it’s just a matter of time.

Well, you heard it here in the middle. There’s that much you can be thankful for.

The Fat Lady Just Keeps On Singin’

Yes, that’s right - there’s a new version of Opera available.

Opera’s latest release addresses the security issue in the Flash Player (Secunia Advisory 17437). Opera 8.51 for Windows ships with Macromedia Flash version 7r61.

The release is a recommended security upgrade for Linux/FreeBSD/Solaris users, because it updates Opera’s wrapper script to not run commands included with URLs passed from other applications (as suggested in Secunia Advisory 16907).

I’m a bit surprised that they didn’t bundle it with the Flash 8 player, but at the least this will alleviate security concerns on a fresh install.

My torrid affair with Opera is still going strong.

Favourite Web Site Awards Redux

The good folks over at the FWA have rolled out a new design. Cursory look, and I’m impressed. Slick, quick, clean…everything a Favourite Website Awards site should have.

Mosey on over and have a look @ theFWA.com

(Thanks to my buddy Shane Romulus for the link.)
