Injection Protection

Security is, obviously, extrememly important. And in the world of MySQL, lacking (currently) support for stored procedures, SQL Injection Attacks are prevalent. These range from the harmless to the debilitating. As web developers, it is extremely important that we protect ourselves, our clients and our users from these types of attacks.

Now, what is an injection attack? If you don’t know and you’re a web developer, you’re in trouble.

-Bertrand Le Roy

Bertrand has an excellent post describing what an injection attack is, and how to combat/prevent them, on his blog. It’s .NET centric, but the principles can be applied universally.

MS Research…

Along the lines of my previous entry about not re-inventing the wheel…

I’m currently reading ‘Information Architecture for the World Wide Web‘, and I’ve been noticing quite a few references to research done by Microsoft in the footnotes. Of course, noticing being only half the battle, I took a jaunt over to Microsoft’s research site, and did a quick bit of poking around.

Unsurprisingly, there are oodles and oodles of publications available (in .doc and/or .pdf), covering a wide variety of topics (including graphics development, systems architecture, web studies, etc). Information overload occured when querying for ALL articles, published in any category at any time. Regardless of MS’s warning that such a query could take quite a while, it completed pretty quickly. My cursory scan through the list has peaked my curiousity - I plan to be doing some serious re-searching over there.

Check it out @ Research.Microsoft.com.

WTF?

I’ve been meaning to post this for some time. We all know that it’s better to learn from the mistakes of others, that we shouldn’t try to reinvent the wheel, etc, etc. Well, if you want to learn from the worst, you should bookmark this blog.

FlashinTO August Gathering

The next FlashinTO gathering is being held on Wednesday, August 25, 2004. I’ve spoken to Shawn about speaking, and have been given the go-ahead. Question becomes, what would you like to hear about? I’ve been toying with 2 ideas, one being an overview of the 7.2 update, as it reflects on ActionScript, the other being diving into Event Dispatching and the new EventDelegate class in AS 2.0.

Let me know what you think on those, or any other topic, in the comments. Thanks…

Great post from Peter Hall on how to avoid failure in the frustrating world of using shared font symbol in Flash.
